C, a friend of the former Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police, Sir Ian Blair, issued a claim over an article in the Daily Mail entitled “Met Boss in new ‘Cash for a friend’ storm”.

Although living in the States they retained substantial connections in the UK. The libel concerned a section on the website of Hamilton Franks & Co Ltd , the Respondents referred to as the “blacklist”

In a massive defeat for the government Ministers were taken by surprise as peers voted by 272 to 141 to introduce a low-cost arbitration system for victims of press defamation, one of the key recommendations of the Leveson report.
